Kim Jong Un is at it again. How very polite of him to warn foreigners to leave South Korea before he launches his thermonuclear war! If I were not taking the young mans erratic threats so seriously I'd find it hard not to laugh at images of the diminutive little man standing amongst his military leaders looking so seriously at deployment maps I doubt he can even read. I do laugh at the stream of propaganda videos pouring out of North Korea portraying America as a country of 90% homelessness where the tens and tens of millions of "homeless" Americans are lining up at soup kitchens funded by the "Peace Loving" people of North Korea and their endless outpouring of aid to keep us decadent socialists fed. I cringe when I watch the fantasy video of one mans dream of New York bathed in nuclear fire.
If I weren't taking this seriously.
The two Koreas are closer to war that at any time since the cease fire signed at the end of original hostilities. This is the cease fire North Korea, last week, nullified by claiming they have entered a state of war with their more than half century long enemy. Short of the declaration of war this is nothing the world has not seen before from the communist nation. In fact it's being considered for listing on the calender as an annual event, sort of like North Korean Kristmas. Every year about the time countries are considering aid packages North Korea starts its threats and saber rattling in hopes of scaring the world in to more concessions. Like placating the spoiled brat in the room they often get their extra helping of aid and flash their sly little grin and retreat for another year to thumb their nose at the world.
This year, however, things are very, very different in two respects.
North Korea has never had such a young, inexperienced, uneducated, and quite frankly immature leader.
And we are facing that leader at the first time in history that his country has nuclear weapons.
What's to stop a self proclaimed video game addict from pushing just one more button? He has grown up never knowing conflict. It's a mystery what lessons in statesmanship, if any, were passed on to him by his secretive father. His life seems a contradiction having been raised by the leader of one of the worlds last remaining true communist nations yet living a life mirroring that of any wealthy Beverly Hills socialite teen. He is quick to make threats, even cause ripples of escalation through the world community, but his ability to pull his punches is very much in doubt. He is so reclusive that no one is really sure of him...and it has me worried.
Because I don't think this boy has any intention of pulling his punches.
My father-in-law fought in the Korean War. I was stationed there for a time. My fear now is that my nephew, recently out of the Army and on active reserve after two tours in Afghanistan, may get dragged back if someone doesn't put this child leader over their knee and spank some sense in to him.
Working against this new and unpredictable situation is a world political climate that never existed during the Annual Threat Cycle. President Obama has taken an impressively strong hard line and sworn out support of not only South Korea but Japan and any other nations North Korea is attempting to keep at bay with its nuclear threat. He has sworn out unwavering support by any means necessary and, though no one wants to see us waging a war on another front, I support his decision a hundred percent. China, traditionally a staunch ally of North Korea, is keeping a cautionary distance but is showing every inclination of, if pulled in to this, being willing to pressure their long time neighbor in to backing down. I must say that, while they have a long way to go, I am impressed with how the Chinese are attempting to join the world in the 20th century while maintaining their culture and government. Russia has as much at stake as we do when it comes to facing a nuclear armed North Korea, who must eye the former Soviet Union with mistrust since they abandoned Communism in the late eighties.
A check of the headlines moments ago has intelligence agencies in two countries certain that Kim Jong Un will launch a missile. It has already been moved in to position. There are questions the media has not answered either in the name of national security or perhaps so as not to cause a panic. Where is this weapon aimed? Is it, as threatened, nuclear tipped? Is it tactical? Air or ground burst? With so little practical testing what are the odds it will work as designed? Is this simply a case of this lunatic boy leader wanting to prove he can play chicken better than his father or grandfather?
In fact of all these questions only one really matters.
Is Jong Un willing to declare war on the rest of the entire human race?
I believe with all my heart that answer is yes. He will ostracize those he purports to care about, he will throw them all as meat in to a grinder, because he cares nothing for those given in to his care by a father who was no more than a tyrant, but a tyrant with brains enough to know when to deliver the punch line before thousands died.
I am already having nightmares of my nephew opening his closet and reaching for the uniform he has twice over earned the right to retire honorably. I dreamed all night of friends still in uniform receiving their orders to go and avenge others burned in the fires of a first nuclear strike by any nation. I rose from my bed in a cold sweat five times during the night, silently closed the bedroom door each time as to not wake Sarah, and crept to my office. What progress I've made in the past three weeks to quit smoking fell by the wayside as I chain smoked and tried to think of ways to get the Marine Corps, or any service, to allow me to re-enlist as a medic.
And I will prepare. I've made it well known that I am a "prepper". I am far from the fanatics on the television series of the same name but I have our food, weapons, ammunition, vehicles, gas, and several alternate locations in rural areas of the state. I am not willing to risk my or Sarahs life of the intelligence estimates that North Koreas ICBMs can't reach to continental U.S..
I've no doubt you're sitting on the edge of your seats wondering what I would advise as a direction in this international crisis. If you've followed my column at all you'll already know that answer.
If this little bastard wants to bluff I say we dispatch our entire Pacific Fleet with a half a million troops and call his bluff with the thunder of Stealth bombers and more heavy artillery than they ever imagined possible. We need to not so gently remind them that we are not the United Stated Military of the of the 1950s, we are stronger, better trained, more technologically advanced, and stronger of heart than any nation led in fear by a despot than the brave men they faced on our last outing.
A MESSAGE FOR YOU, KIM JONG UN...
Our Air Force has the technology and expertise to spy you out where ever you cower...
Our Army no longer marches but is a mechanized behemoth that will leave behind it a cloud of dust and sweep before it the joke you call your "Million Man Army"...
Our Navy shall stand in to shore and engorge wave after wave of man and machine while our ever superior Naval Aviators shall first blot from the sky anything you dare to launch against us the, when we own the air space above your already doomed nation, we shall commence to bomb, taking the lives of the innocent men, women, and children and they die knowing your lies doomed them to a fiery death...and with their dying breaths they shall condemn you to HELL...
And my beloved Marine Corps shall rove in its Blackhawks at will and find you and drag you from whatever hole you bury yourself in, drag you on to the world stage, where like that braggart Saddam Hussein...
YOU SHALL SWING FROM A ROPE AND WE SHALL REJOICE WITH EVERY TWINGE OF NERVE AND WE SHALL REJOICE IN YOUR PASSING TO THE GATES OF HELL!
So make your threats you spoiled little boy. Lead your people to their death. My nephew shall fight you. If I can convince them of my worth I shall join him.
For it is men and women like us, with strength born of living free, and equal, and with respect for our fellow man, who can take on your supposed legions. It is we who would allow your people to rise from their current level one step above serfs and choose their own path.
We will keep the people of South Korea in our prayers. They stand in the direct path of this sorry excuse for a "leader". We would tell them that they will not be abandoned. Japan, also a target as North Korea has openly stated, shall find us standing beside them, our one time enemies who have over the years earned the love and respect and dedication of the American people. No country in the world will openly stand with North Korea, but we will stand with you and defend, if necessary, as if we shared the same blood.
It's time to end the threats and show him we will not live with a sword to our throats.
