After taking Labor Day off (I was Laboring) here we are again. I read the last few reviews I did and, behold, I am highly disappointed in myself. I have been being far too nice in my opinions! Well, enough of that rubbish! Here's a look at recent headlines and the REAL thoughts they've provoked in yours truly.
Massive Rent Increases to Continue... http://realestate.msn.com/massive-rent-increases-to-continue
With the economy showing signs of real, stable recovery rent costs are on the rise and renters are feeling the pain.
This is a tough one for me. We own apartment complexes and rely on that income not only for ourselves but to keep our employees employed. One side of me wants to agree that these massive increases are outstripping incomes. The other side of me that sees people whine and complain constantly, says "Suck it up!". Recently we made the decision to enact our first rent increase since 2007. It was no where near the national average of 3.9% either, but a mere $25 a month. Many shrugged it off. A few, however, caused me to break my normally calm demeanor and laugh right in their faces. Nearly a dozen people, some paying as little as $350 a month for a two bedroom apartment, came and demanded we lower their rent! Serious, SERIOUS cajones! In the immortal words of the Eagles song...GET OVER IT!
Senate Committee agrees to Limited Strike on Syria... http://worldnews.nbcnews.com/_news/2013/09/03/20306844-senate-committee-authorizes-limited-military-response-in-syria?lite=
In a 10-7 vote the Senate Foreign Relations Committee agrees to allow President Obama the authorization to launch a strike on Syria in light of President Assads use of chemical weapons on his own civilian populace.
First of all, excellent move. The playing field in Syria needed to be leveled. Now we are on a slippery slope though. First, if the response isn't strictly limited we risk raising the ire of China and Russia. Second, the Senate and the President have both sworn that his move will never put U.S. soldiers on the ground in Syria...and they better damn well mean it. We've just closed the first from of a two front war when we pulled out troops out of Iraq, leaving Afghanistan. Now we have "advisers" in Africa mimicking the beginning of the Vietnam War. If we put ground troops in to Syria I will gladly sign the petition for impeachment.
Royal Navy Admits to Firing on Whales During Falklands War... http://now.msn.com/hms-brilliant-mistook-whales-for-submarines-during-falklands-war
Lacking the technology of todays submarines, the HMS Brilliant fired on whales during the Falklands War thinking they were enemy submarines.
Leave it to the Squids...even the British Squids. A shame the whaling embargo was not in effect! Or hey...maybe we caught em at tea time and the control room had a skeleton crew. It's fortunate that the Brits can't hit the broad side of Antarctica with an Exocet Missile so at least we know the big critters survived.
George Zimmerman having a VERY BAD WEEK!... http://now.msn.com/george-zimmerman-stopped-for-speeding-in-texas-with-gun-in-glove-compartment
In the same week George Zimmerman was pulled over for speeding in Texas and found to be in possession of a handgun, and his wife, recently found guilty of perjury, filed for divorce.
I'm sure I will catch flak but I still feel one hundred percent guilty in the murder of Treyvon Martin so perhaps this is Karma kicking him in his pretty, white teeth. I STILL question how Zimmerman, after facing two counts of domestic violence, came to even be issued a concealed carry handgun permit. Now the wife...is she honestly sick of the circus that's become her life, or does she harbor a secret so dark she can't stand to be reminded of it by waking up beside George every morning?
Ariel Castro, Convicted Kidnapper and Rapist, Found Dead in Cell After Suicide... http://usnews.nbcnews.com/_news/2013/09/04/20315504-prosecutor-castro-a-coward-in-death-as-in-life?lite&ocid=msnhp&pos=2
Shortly after being sentenced to life plus one thousand years Castro, convicted of holding three women hostage for a decade, used a bed sheet to kill himself in his prison cell.
Yes he was delusional. He was directly quoted as saying, ""I am not a violent person. I simply kept them there without being able to leave...". He was a monster, an animal, a pig, and now we know, A COWARD. He enslaved, raped, and brutalized three young women for as much as half their lives. When he got caught he tried to play the "I'm sick" card. He lost. Instead of manning up he hung himself. I hope like hell it took a VERY LONG TIME and that it HURT LIKE HELL. Still it will never equal the suffering his victims have and will face. Good riddance so S.O.B.
Texas High School Stabbing Found to be Gang Related...
A seventeen year old suspect in a fatal Harris County, Texas school stabbing is in custody after what is believed the be part of a gang rivalry.
One of my favorite subjects! Yes I will keep beating this dead horse. There have always been gangs. The massive escalation of the problem, however, did not occur until the early to mid seventies when parents began practicing this New Age of Discipline. Instead of actually PUNISHING their kids many parents started giving them "Time outs", they stopped being PARENTS and chose to become their kids FRIENDS. The results? Bloods. Crips. Several other nation wide gangs. Kids murdering kids, doing drive by shootings with MAC-10s and AK-47s. I do not condone CHILD ABUSE but, by damn, until the time comes we take raising our kids out of the Governments hands and TEACHING them right from wrong this will continue to escalate. Then again is we wait too long we may never be able to bring them back. I raised my kids with a firm hand. I will admit that gladly because of have five GREAT adult children.
Fracking Confirmed as the Cause of Ohio Quake... http://www.nbcnews.com/science/fracking-practices-blame-ohio-earthquakes-8C11073601?ocid=msnhp&pos=4
Some months after a small Ohio town allowed "fracking", a method of forcefully extracting natural resources through a form of displacement, an earthquake struck a small Ohio town.
Any kid who took science in or prior to sixth grade knows that two things can not occupy the same space without repercussions...sometimes rather serious ones. You drill a hole down in to the earth where you hope to find oil or natural gas. You then force water ant lethally high pressures down that hole to force the desired resource to the surface. Let me put this in simplest terms. Rock. Hard place. Nuff said?
Kentucky Man Claims he Killed His Terminally Ill Wife as a Mercy Killing... http://news.msn.com/crime-justice/ky-man-claims-he-shot-wife-in-mercy-killing
Ernest Chumbley was arrested for and stand accused of murder in the death of his wife, Virginia. She suffered from terminal breast cancer and he claims she asked him to shoot her as a means of ending her pain.
Fine, if he can prove it, if she left a letter or other means of communication stating this truth, I don't believe the man should be charged. Without that I have to wonder...were his actions purely selfless? Was it HE that could not handle her suffering? Had caring for her worn him out to the point he had to end her life for his OWN piece of mind? Sorry, but without evidence I think the charges should stand.
Montana Judge Orders New Sentencing for Teacher Having Sex With 14 Year Old Student... http://usnews.nbcnews.com/_news/2013/09/03/20306649-embattled-montana-judge-orders-new-sentencing-for-teacher-convicted-of-sex-with-student?lite=
Judge G. Todd Baugh had back peddled is his decision in sentencing a teacher to thirty days for engaging in sexual intercourse with a fourteen year old student.
Perhaps a new low in the justice system, or perhaps a judge suffering from early onset senile dementia? Either way and under ANY law Judge Baugh should retire. Now that he, himself, has opened the issue of a possible misreading of the law the prosecution could well use this opportunity to claim the entire trial was tainted. Yes...there's even a slim chance this scum bag could walk FREE.
Short but sweet...that's the wrap-up for the week ending September 6th, 2013. Hope I am back to what you all want to see, and thank you for tuning in!
